Zusammenfassung: | The USDA's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Farmers; Market Nutrition Program provides coupons to farmers' markets for qualified women. A survey of 2000 participants in the program indicated that low-income, pregnant, and nursing women were motivated to procure fresh produce from the markets. Survey respondents exhibited a small but significant increase in their consumption of fruit and vegetables: 4.5 servings a day, compared with 3.56 in the control group. Of those given coupons, 62% used them, and most expressed a desire to return to the markets. Many suggestions for improvement were offered, along with recommendations to expand the program. |
