Zusammenfassung:This article presents the relationship that exists between a closed building in tension — a national library—, and an open component that defines it — its storage—. The concept of the library has been transformed over the length of history according to the number of existing books. From then on, they came up with new storage ideas and new types of libraries: from armarium or arkon to a room and, from a room to building. To determine the type of building to which the national library would have to turn in the 21st century, architecture assumes an important role. For this, Chile’s National Library is considered as a case study and compares it with two world referents: France National Library and the British Museum Library1 in England. In addition, the article reveals three typologies that come from a national library to give account of this phenomenon.
