Zusammenfassung:Even a high‐rise tower condominium in the urban center continued to experience electricity and water outages for a long time after the storm because the electrical systems in the basement had been damaged by flooding. In the earthquake engineering community that I have been deeply involved with, various, long, and extensive efforts have been made such as the development and revision of seismic codes for building construction, seismic evaluation and rehabilitation techniques for existing buildings, and development and practical application of innovative technologies for both, etc. In addition to these conventional efforts, modern society existing under complex social systems with advanced technologies may also need immediately applicable research outputs as well as fundamental researches to make society really disaster‐resilient and to minimize the disruption of societal activities after an event.
