Zusammenfassung: | It was demonstrated earlier ("Aspects of the Verb Phrase in Edo," Masters Thesis, U of Ilorin, 1986) that nasality spread in Edo (a Kwa language) is most apparent in alternations between verb stems & their suffixes, ie, nasality spreads beyond the segment (across morpheme boundaries) in these circumstances. The question of whether nasality spreads beyond the verb stem & its suffixes onto an object noun phrase is examined. Evidence indicates that this does not occur. However, nasality does spread beyond what is initially defined as a phonological word. A redefinition of the domain of nasality spread is formulated from an autosegmental perspective. It is concluded that nasality is a suprasegmental feature whose domain is the verb stem & its dependent suffixes & clitics. 12 References. Adapted from the source document |
