Los contornos de la bestia: Estado actual de los debates en torno a la caracterización del fascismo

The recent irruption of new far-right tendencies and organizations all over the world has rekindled old debates about the nature of fascism. In the past, most of the relevant academic interventions on this debate came from two well-defined theoretical approaches: Marxist ones on one side, liberal or empathic ones on the other. With this essay, I aim to explore what is being said in these debates today, and how healthy each of those theoretical approaches really is nowadays. To that end, I review five recent books, three showing a Marxist stance, and two a liberal one. I establish a dialogue between those five works, looking for tools useful for answering the question of: what is fascism? In addition, by walking down that road we bump into concepts and ideas useful for thinking the new reactionary authoritarianisms —whether we call them fascists or not. Con la irrupción en los últimos años de organizaciones y corrientes de extrema derecha por todo el mundo, se ha reavivado el viejo debate sobre qué fue (o es) el fascismo. En el pasado, el grueso de las intervenciones académicas relevantes en este debate se ha hecho desde dos perspectivas: la marxista, y la liberal o empática. Con este ensayo, pretendo explorar en qué punto están hoy esos debates, qué se está diciendo actualmente acerca del fascismo, y de qué salud gozan esas dos escuelas. A ese fin, reseño cinco obras recientes, tres cercanas a la perspectiva marxista y dos a la liberal. Las hago dialogar entre ellas, y en ese diálogo busco herramientas que sirvan para responder a la pregunta de: ¿qué es el fascismo? Asimismo, al hacer ese camino, nos vamos topando con conceptos y reflexiones útiles para pensar los nuevos autoritarismos reaccionarios, acabemos o no llamándolos fascistas.
