Zusammenfassung:The paper is a contribution to a series of recollections and reflections on the professional experiences of distinguished economists which the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro Quarterly Review started in 1979. The economic and social problems associated with the depression in the 1930s were prevalent in Don Patinkin’s neighbourhood, thus influencing him to become an economist. In his graduate studies at the University of Chicago, he was exposed to Frank Knight, Jacob Viner, Henry Simons, Jacob Marshak and Oskar Lange, professors whom he credits for his training as an economist.   JEL Codes: B31
