Zusammenfassung: | German higher education reforms initiated by the Bologna Process and the looming changes in vocational training arrangements influenced by the Copenhagen Process call the stability of the German occupational concept ("Berufsprinzip") in question. The article first discusses the usefulness of this concept for higher education and poses the question of the "vocationally qualifying" character of the newly arranged courses of study. The development of an overarching framework of qualifications, covering higher education and vocational education and training opens up new perspectives for braking down the barriers between these two education areas and for the development of new competition and cooperation relationships between university and vocational education.
