Reyes, señores, súbditos y vasallos: la pastoral eclesiástica sobre el ideal de las relaciones políticas en Castilla (siglos XIV-XVII)

This paper will approach the ethos (i.e., the moral background) taught by the Church through pastoral works (handbooks for confessors and books of moral theology) on relationships between political rulers and their subjects. For this purpose, we will work with a selection of works written (or widely read) in the Crown of Castile and Leon between the 14th and 17th centuries. The first part is about the casuistry on the legitimacy of the authority, the power, and the control of the wealth and resources by the rulers (king, princes, lords). In the second part, we will focus on the question about the community leader's responsibility for their subjects' behavior. In the third part, we can see the moral issue of taxes (what levies are lawful and what others are not, and the fair goals of these incomes…). The last part concerns the subjects' duties regarding their lords and sovereigns, when they should obey them, and when they should not. En el presente trabajo se hace una aproximación a los parámetros morales enseñados por la Iglesia en sus obras pastorales (manuales de confesión y tratados de teología moral) en lo que se refiere a la relación entre gobernantes y gobernados. Para ello, se ha seleccionado un grupo de obras que se escribieron o leyeron asiduamente en la Corona de Castilla y León entre los siglos XIV y XVII. En primer lugar, se trata la casuística sobre la legitimidad de la autoridad, del poder y del dominio sobre bienes y recursos por parte de los gobernantes (reyes, príncipes, nobles...). En segundo lugar, se aborda la cuestión de la responsabilidad del gobernante de la comunidad sobre la conducta de sus súbditos. En la tercera parte se exponer la problemática de los tributos e impuestos (cuáles son lícitos y cuáles no, los fines para los que se debe emplear...). Por último, se tratan los deberes que deben cumplir los súbditos respecto a sus señores y cuándo están obligados a obedecerlos y cuándo no.
