Zusammenfassung:Periodontal disease occurs after the accumulation of dental biofilm, which generates an immunoinflammatory response producing oxidative stress and damage to the periodontium, with overproduction of free radicals and reactive species such as nitric oxide (NO). In this sense, melatonin, an antioxidant indolamine, can be an alternative to counteract these damages and promote periodontal healing. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of subgingival melatonin as an adjunct in the treatment of periodontitis. 6 patients with chronic periodontitis were selected; The sample was divided into the control side where scaling and root planing (RAR) were performed and the experimental side (RAR + plasma gel with melatonin). Gingival crevicular fluid (FCG) samples and probing depth measurements were taken. Post evaluations were made at 15 and 45 days. A descriptive analysis was carried out and the student's T test was used. Finding that NO levels decreased in the experimental group from 7.02 ± 3.29 µM to 2.51 ± 0.84 µM, with respect to the control group 2.28 ± 0.72 µM to 3.05 ± 1, 02 µM at 15 and 45 days respectively; the mean probing depth for the experimental group was 6.13mm to 3.80mm and for the control group 6.10mm to 4.50mm at the beginning and end of treatment.
