The professional graduated in Veterinary Medicine must have solid basis in contents related to Public Health, besides the aptitude of working in an interdisciplinary way and so, help human populations cope with its main challenges. The present work had as an objective to identify Veterinary Medicine student’s notions over the performance of this professional in the Public Health area. One hundred and forty interviews were made using individual questionnaires to Veterinary Medicine undergraduate students from FCAV – UNESP, Jaboticabal Campus-SP. For so, three types of questionnaires were developed, one for freshman students, one for veterans on the third year, when professional disciplines start and another one, for veterans on the fi fth year, when the obligatory curricular training start. The results obtained showed that 85.7% (42/49) of freshman students point medicine and surgery as veterinarian’s performance area, followed by 55.1% (27/49) for animal products inspection and cite as an area that the veterinarian can work in Public Health with food inspection (61.2%), followed by public departments (44.9%) and zoonosis control centers (26.5%). Veteran students were unanimous when questioned over the professional role in public health, relating this fact to zoonosis control, but unknowing the law which includes the veterinarian in the health area. Eighty eight students out of one hundred and forty (62.8%) would work in this area, 29.2% (41/140) wouldn’t and 7.8% (11/140) perhaps. Veterinary Medicine students still privilege medicine and surgery performance areas above others. So, the professional is graduated to act in a therapeutic manner and not preventive, being its shaping defi cient in concepts and laws concerning public health area besides the late contact with the subjects, what diminishes the interest and search for this area by the students.
