Zusammenfassung: | Introduction: Zika virus is a flavivirus mainly transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquito, spreading rapidly throughout the world, so it is necessary to implement preventive strategies aimed at eradicating the transmitting agent of this disease. Objective: to analyze the effectiveness of an applied educational intervention in secondary school students. Method: a non-observational, quasi-experimental intervention study was carried out on 512 schoolchildren aged 12-15 years from Combate de Bacunagua secondary school in Pinar del Rio the municipality, school course 2015-2016. The research was developed during three
defined periods: a first moment in which the diagnosis was made to identify the learning needs about the disease caused by Zika virus; a second moment dedicated to the intervention on the population under study, and the last moment aimed at evaluating the impact of the intervention. Results: knowledge about the disease increased, and with it the risk perception of the students, providing an opportunity to transfer this information to their family and the rest of
the community where they live. Conclusion: the educational intervention was effective, since it raised the level of knowledge about Zika virus infection, it contributed to the adoption of alternatives for the resolution of the risk factor increasing the proliferation of the vector in the community, reinforcing the responsibility of school children into the context where they are raised, strengthening the importance of inter-sector teamwork to apply these programs.
