Analisando a imagem medieval: entre Panofsky e a cultura visual

This article discusses issues concerning the specificity of the analysis of the medieval image, and discusses the approximations and distancing between Panofsky methodology and Visual Culture so that these images can be analyzed. The method proposed by Erwin Panofsky has suffered a lot of criticism that will be highlighted in this article, however, his method remains important, especially considering the characteristics of medieval iconography. To better understand of his method we’ll put it in their initial area of construction, the Warburg Institute, discussing the influences that helped in their formulation. Finally, we will approach the discussions raised by the theorists of the Visual Culture to think where Panofsky and its methodological formulation are relevant, so we can think about the benefits and limitations of using his method related to the study of images produced during the Middle Ages Este artigo aborda questões concernentes a especificidade da análise da imagem medieval, e discute as aproximações e distanciamentos entre a metodologia de Panofsky e a Cultura Visual para que estas imagens sejam analisadas. O método proposto por Erwin Panofsky já sofreu muitas críticas que serão salientadas neste artigo, porém, seu método continua sendo importante, principalmente se considerarmos as características da iconografia medieval. Para entendermos melhor seu método o colocaremos dentro de seu espaço inicial de construção, o Instituto Warburg, discutindo as influências que auxiliaram na sua formulação. Por fim, iremos aproximar as discussões levantadas pelos teóricos da Cultura Visual para pensarmos onde Panofsky e sua formulação metodológica encontram relevância, para refletir sobre os benefícios e as limitações do uso de seu método relacionado ao estudo das imagens produzidas durante o medievo.
