Zusammenfassung: | The Republican government, when it took over the political power in Rio Grande
do Sul, triggered a process of commercialization of the lands considered vacant, which
were concentrated in the northern part of the state, being used as a source of revenue for the
public treasury. In the meantime, these territories were inhabited by national worker and
indigenous squatters who, as a result of this governmental action, came into conflict with
the local authorities and each other. With the commercialization of the vacant areas, there
was an expansion of the occupation with people coming from other regions, mainly
immigrants or their descendants, generating new conflicts with the squatters.
