Uncertainty Associated to Parents of Preterm Infants Hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Units

This work sought to determine the factorsassociated to uncertainty in parents of pretermnewborns hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units(NICU). Methods. This was a cross-sectional analyticstudy with 117 parents (79 mothers and 38 fathers)of preterm newborns hospitalized in three NICUs ofCartagena (Colombia). Sociodemographic informationwas included; the biophysical profile of the preterminfant (PTI) and the results from the Mishel Uncertaintyin Illness Scale. Results. A high level of uncertaintywas found in 49.3% of the mothers and 52.6% of thefathers. The OR lower limits the variables of the parentsthat were associated to uncertainty were: OR = 2.5not having a partner and OR = 2.3 having secondaryeducation, plan OR = 2.8 belonging to socioeconomiclevels 1 and 2.
