Zusammenfassung: | A participatory self-diagnosis was carried out at a company engaged in the manufacture of mattresses and foam rubber pads based in Guadalajara, Mexico with the purpose of getting workers involved with the identification of safety and occupational health issues. A focus group was assembled consisting of 14 participants. Information was collected by means of various participatory techniques such as, e.g. field visits, interviews, and focus group discussions. As a result, nine different health problems related to the work were identified. The results provided evidence of respiratory difficulties associated with the inhalation of flock particles, visual problems due to fatigue, and stress because of unsuitable procedures with a rating of (3) very frequent. The degree of severity assigned to the health issues was (3), i.e. very severe, for stress because of unsuitable procedures and falls, and (2), serious, for the respiratory problems due to inhalation of particles and visual problems. The suggested solutions for respiratory problems were: using personal protection equipment, reducing suspended particles, and requiring visitors to wear mouth covers in the area. To address stress-related issues, suggestions included rearranging materials and renovating the work space. The conclusion was drawn that the participation of the workers in the identification of safety and occupational health issues makes them more aware of these problems and encourages a more proactive approach to building alternative solution.
