Historia, memoria, identidad y performance en una fiesta: la Semana Santa de Ayacucho

This article attempts to uncover the meaning that captures the most importation religious festival of the city of Ayacucho, Holy Week (Semana Santa) through an ethnographic description and a historical investigation. With a combination of both an anthropological and historical method, authors argue that Holy Week is a space that ritualizes the regional history, and at the same time, it reproduces the local social structure. The festival acquired this dual characterization during the 20th century, when its celebration was ruled by the Catholic Church that was interested in consolidating its hegemony in the region. El presente artículo, a través de una descripción etnográfica y una exploración histórica de la Semana Santa, intenta hallar el significado que encierra la fiesta más importante de la ciudad de Ayacucho. Combinando el método antropológico con el histórico, postula la idea de que la Semana Santa es un espacio que ritualiza la historia regional y a la vez reproduce la estructura social local. La fiesta adquirió esta doble característica a lo largo del siglo XX, cuando su celebración fue normada por la Iglesia Católica interesada en consolidar su hegemonía en la región.
