CO2-SPICER - CO2 Storage Pilot In a CarbonatE Reservoir: Technical Report for period 1/11/2020 – 31/12/2021

This report summarizes results of the first year of the project activities. CO2-SPICER is an acronym of the project CO2 Storage Pilot In a CarbonatE Reservoir in SE Czech Republic, which started in November 2020 and is going to end in April 2024. Five organizations work together on this collaborative research including the Czech Geological Survey, MND a.s. – the principal oil and gas company in Czechia, NORCE – Norwegian Research Centre AS, VSB – Technical University of Ostrava and Institute of Geophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The activities started with gathering and consolidation of data, including 3D geological model of the storage complex, dynamic modelling and simulation of past oil and gas production and of future carbon dioxide storage. These are supported by geomechanical assessments and geochemistry of rocks and fluids. Risk assessment and monitoring take care of safety aspects of the storage activities. Analysis of the situation of the greenhouse gas emission sources in Czechia, potential transportation routes and available technologies necessary at the storage sites provide basis for scenarios formulation of future site development.
