Zusammenfassung:Hermann Gundert (1814-1893) was a German missionary, linguist, indologist, teacher, writer and publisher. He collected texts on the history, literature and geography of Kerala, wrote the first grammar of Malayalam and a dictionary, 'A Malayalam and English Dictionary'. Together with his wife Julie (née Dubois), he organised the establishment and development of schools, including those for girls. The house they lived in in Thalassery on the west coast of India is now a museum, which I visited in early October 2024. His dictionary is digitally accessible and helps me to interpret historical texts. This short video is dedicated to all those who are currently helping me to better understand and speak this language. The video is embedded in this blog post: Susanne Rau (November 29, 2024).
