• Several properties of heatwaves (HWs) are analyzed at the regional and global scales by using observations and simulations for recent and future time periods.
• For a given global warming level, the intensification of future HWs is strongly model dependent and modulated at the regional scale.
• The largest increase in HW duration/frequency (magnitude) is found over Amazonia and the Arabian Peninsula (northern mid-latitudes). |
