Zusammenfassung: | This data set is a sample of 48 SSA countries, that covers the period from 1990 to 2022, using annual data.
The dependent variable in our study is homicide. Most previous empirical studies estimate homicide using intentional homicide per 100,000 people. These data are collected from the World Development Indicators (WDI) database of the World Bank.
The key explanatory variable of interest to us is unemployment, which is defined as the proportion of the working population who are unemployed but available and looking for work (World Bank, 2023). These data also come from the World Bank’s WDI database.
To support the relationship between unemployment and homicide, our major analyses include some a set of control variables that are important determinants of homicide. These variables include: GDP growth defined as the annual percentage growth rate of GDP at market prices based on a constant local currency; inflation measured by the consumer price index; the adult literacy rate, which is the percentage of people aged 15 and over who can both read and write; enrolment in tertiary education measured by the gross enrolment ratio. |
