José Luis Romany, in memoriam. L’actualitat d’una pregunta irredempta

Durant cinc anys de la dècada dels 70, José Luis Romany va fotografiar, dibuixar i mesurar desenes d'habitatges vernacles de l'entorn de Dénia. L'objectiu principal era identificar sistemes constructius i tipus arquitectònics propis de la casa popular a aquesta zona. Els seus dibuixos i anotacions van ser preses a llapis a mà alçada durant les visites en petits quaderns escolars de dibuix. Va repassar algun d'aquests dibuixos a tinta durant les llargues absències a Madrid. Tenia al cap realitzar un estudi en profunditat, però aquest projecte va quedar truncat. Tot això va ser objecte de sengles exposicions, el 2007 i 2016.La seva mort recent ens commina a recuperar no només la seva feina. Ens obliga a repensar el nostre lloc respecte d'aquell patrimoni a què tanta atenció va dedicar i del que queda tan poc. Més enllà del valor del seu testimoniatge, avui s'imposa la pregunta per la relació del nostre present amb un passat no tan llunyà amb què amb prou feines compartim res. Què fer amb aquella límpida arquitectura vernacla que avui, davant de la dignitat d'una ruïna o la humiliació de veure's transformada en vulgar chalet, reclama ser partícip del present? For five years in the 1970s, José Luis Romany photographed, drew and measured dozens of vernacular homes around Dénia. His main objective was to identify construction systems and architectural types typical of the popular house in that area. His drawings and notes were taken freehand in pencil during the visits in small school drawing notebooks. He reviewed some of these ink drawings during his long absences in Madrid. He had in mind to carry out an in-depth study, but this project was cut short. All of this was the subject of exhibitions in 2007 and 2016.His recent death compels us to recover not only his work. He forces us to rethink our place with respect to that heritage to which he devoted so much attention and of which so little remains. Beyond the value of his testimony, today the question arises about the relationship of our present with a not-so-distant past with which we barely share anything. What to do with that limpid vernacular architecture that today, faced with the dignity of a ruin or the humiliation of being transformed into a vulgar chalet, demands to be a participant in the present?
