Using Diamond Threadwire Saw® in subtotal temporal bone resectioning

In subtotal temporal bone resectioning, rigid devices such as chisels and drill oscillators have been used for petrous apex osteotomy. Meticulous attention is necessary to protect important surrounding organs such as the brain, internal carotid artery, internal jugular vein and sigmoid sinus. For the surgical procedure, experience and technique are tested. We are using wire saw (Diamond Threadwire saw: Diamond T-saw®) for the petrous apex osteotomy. This procedure is relatively manageable and beneficial for shortening operation time. The procedure is also thought useful for preventing tumors and bacterial dissemination because a mastoidectomy is not required to secure the resection line. We report on 12 cases, which were treated with this technique.
