Experimental Programs: An Investigation of the Effect of Types of Exercises on Mathematics Learning

An experimental study was carried out by the University of Maryland Mathematics Project (UMMaP)* to investigate the effects of some instructional variables in mathematics learning. Specifically, the two instructional variables being tested were (a) immediate knowledge of correctness of response; and (b) two distinct types of exercises: those framed in a physical world setting and those framed in a purely mathematical setting.
