Cytological and immunohistochemical studies of a sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary

Cytologic and immunohistochemical findings of an ovarian sclerosing stromal tumor are reported. A 33-year-old woman had a right ovarian tumor, measuring 6 cm. The cytological specimen obtained at surgery showed two kinds of benign tumor cells ; one had round nuclei and vacuolated cytoplasm, and the other one had spindle-shaped nuclei. Histologically also, the ovarian tumor was composed of two kinds of cell, i.e. polygonal cells with round nuclei and illdefined cells with spindle-shaped nuclei. Immunohistochemically, these tumor cells were positive for vimentin and focally for desmin. This study demonstrated a significant correlation between cytologic and histologic findings of the ovarian sclerosing stromal tumor.
