Zusammenfassung: | Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease that courses with hyperglycemia and disorders of carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism. Epidemiological studies estimate that 1 in 11 adults (20 to 79 years old) had DM in 2015 and the prevalence of DM is expected to increase by 50% in the next 20 years, especially in developing countries. Knowing the mortality rates of a disease and its demographic distribution, in addition to the profile of hospital morbidity, allows the development of more efficient public policies and intervention strategies based on new studies. Considering the absence of articles on this topic, the importance of the present study is justified, whose objective was to conduct a longitudinal analysis of hospital morbidity and mortality from diabetes and its complications in Brazil between the years 2000 and 2020, based on information systems of SUS. Although the number of hospital admissions has decreased, the number of deaths has increased successively, which reveals a poor management of complications and severe cases. Thus, it is concluded that Brazil needs to invest in strategies for early and effective treatment of severe conditions, as well as in prevention measures to reduce the number of cases of diabetes and, consequently, the number of deaths as well. |
