Zusammenfassung:This paper addresses the subject of self-learning, and it underscores the paramount importance of guidance for its development during the processes of teaching and learning. The concept of “self-learning” encompasses three main abilities: autonomy, metacognition, and self-regulation, which lead to a self-learning process. This definition has roots in the teaching theory, and all its elements are linked to the self-learning abilities underlying. It is vital to state that the great importance of the teacher role during this process, since they will provide all the necessary learning tools for the students to become active during the learning process. Therefore, it is confirmed that the self-learning process is not a path for the student to walk alone; a guidance is required for its development. Similarly, to acquire self learning abilities will allow students to achieve an active role during the learning process, which will also lead to develop a critical thinking. As a result, students will not only acquire abilities for academical purposes, but also a set of personal and professional skills. Likewise, some teaching practices that can be adopted to support the self-learning process are procured.
