Stroke often leaves survivors with lasting upper extremity (UE) motor impairments. To influence recovery, the brain must be plastic, or moldable, to allow change, and rehabilitation must be individualized and progressive to encourage change. Aerobic exercise can affect neuroplasticity, allowing subsequent UE intervention to have greater effects. Priming UE rehabilitation methods with aerobic exercise may result in improved upper extremity function and greater overall recovery.
