Spontaneous expulsion of a biliary stent via the abdominal wall : a rare complication : case report

We report a rare complication of a biliary stent inserted via endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) for benign biliary disease in a 60 years-old female presented with abdominal pain and a tender left iliac fossa (LIF) mass. She had change of the skin over the hypo gastric region. Crepitus was felt in the subcutaneous tissue. Surgical drainage of the abscess was undertaken. A black, 14-cm biliary stent was found in the centre of the necrotic tissue. The patient, there made an uneventful recovery and the LIF mass disappeared. The wound was closed with secondary sutures about three weeks later, and complete healing was achieved thereafter. Here we discuss this rare complication. الملخص : نورد في هذه الدراسة حالة تعقيد نادر للحلقة الفاتحة للقناة الصفراوية التي أدخلت بواسطة (ERCP) لمريضة تبلغ 60 سنة من العمر مصابة بمرض حميد بالقناة الصفراوية حيث حضرت و هي تعاني من آلام و تورم في الجانب الحرقفي الأيسر من البطن مع وجود تغير في لون الجلد في منطقة الخثلة و إحساس الفرقعة تحت الجلدية. و عند التصريف الجراحي للخراج تم العثور على حلقة سوداء طولها 14 سم وسط الأنسجة المتخثرة. بعد ذلك تحسنت حالة المريض تلقائيا مع اختفاء الآلام و التورم في المنطقة الحرقفية اليسرى. و في هذه الحالة تناقش هذا التعقيد النادر.
