Effects upon nitrogen utilization of sodium bicarbonate-induced changes in acid-base and electrolyte balance in lambs

Sodium bicarbonate was added at graded levels (0, 2, 4 and 6%) to a high concentrate diet (11% crude protein) consisting of two-thirds rolled barley and one-third corn silage, and offered to eight crossbred wether lambs (27 kg) according to a 4 × 4 double Latin square with four 10-d periods. The die...

Zusammenfassung:Sodium bicarbonate was added at graded levels (0, 2, 4 and 6%) to a high concentrate diet (11% crude protein) consisting of two-thirds rolled barley and one-third corn silage, and offered to eight crossbred wether lambs (27 kg) according to a 4 × 4 double Latin square with four 10-d periods. The diets were offered twice daily, in equal portions at a restricted level of 75 g DM d −1 kg −0.75 . After 5 d of adaptation to the diet, a 5-d collection of urine and feces was initiated. Samples of jugular blood were obtained for assessment of acid-base status and plasma electrolytes. Postprandial blood pH, blood bicarbonate and base excess values increased (P
