Influence of Contralateral Stimulation on Temporal Auditory Summation

Temporal auditory summation was investigated in 30 normally hearing subjects by means of tone pulses of 10 and 500 milliseconds' duration at frequencies of 500, 1000 and 4000 cps. Stimulation of the non-test ear with 80 dB SPL narrow band noise (centered on the tested frequency) was found to di...

Zusammenfassung:Temporal auditory summation was investigated in 30 normally hearing subjects by means of tone pulses of 10 and 500 milliseconds' duration at frequencies of 500, 1000 and 4000 cps. Stimulation of the non-test ear with 80 dB SPL narrow band noise (centered on the tested frequency) was found to disturb the duration-intensity function for threshold in a way similar to that observed in Organ-of-Corti-type hearing loss. In view of previously published observations as to the effect of contralateral masking on differential intensity sensitivity and continuous tone Békésy tracings, it is tempting to interpret also the present findings in terms of adaptation. The results obtained in normal listeners with psycho-acoustic diagnostic tests during continuous contralateral noise stimulation often bear resemblance to the results obtained in subjects with cochlear dysfunction, it is concluded.
