Effects of a Vioform-Entobex Preparation (Mexaform®) on Patients with Chronic Constipation

A Vioform-Entobex preparation (Mexaform®) was given for a three-week period to 19 patients with chronic constipation and compared to a placebo preparation given for the same period. Eleven patients were given placebo first and 8 patients Mexaform first. Bowel habits, stool size and consistency, and some abdominal complaints were registered by the patient daily on printed postcards. Mexaform treatment resulted in significant improvement in respect of days without bowel movement, total number of stools, and their size and consistency when compared to the treatment with placebo. No difference was noted in abdominal pain, distension, or giddiness. Fourteen of the patients claimed that their best period had been when they were on Mexaform, 1 derived more benefit from placebo, and 4 noted no difference.
