Glucose utilization after administration of glucose in patients with cirrhosis

We measured glucose utilization rate and non protein RQ after oral or intravenous administration of glucose in patients with cirrhosis using an indirect calorimetry. In both oral and intravenous administration, the glucose utilization in patients with cirrhosis elevated slowly, but finally reached to the level of the control group. Among cirrhotic patients, the glucose utilization was increased in patients with progressed liver dysfunction. In oral administration, glucose utilization rate was negatively correlated to body mass index, and positively correlated to creatinine height index. These results indicate that the glucose utilization in peripheral tissue is increased in cirrhotic patients.
