Zusammenfassung:	The genus Justicia L. is surveyed using general morphological techniques, and a broad definition of the genus is adopted. Characters of inflorescence, androecium, pollen and seeds proved particularly helpful in describing the 16 sections and 7 subsections. The 295 species used in the study are listed and 69 new specific names are published under Justicia.
