Frē Seyon: A Fifteenth-Century Ethiopian Painter

Fre Seyon was identified as the 15th-century Ethiopian painter who made the large panel painting in the church of Saint Stephen at the monastery of Daga Estifanos at Lake Tana. He was identified through his signature placed within an inscription on the painting. He was later established as a former monk of the defunct monastery of Dabra Gwegweben on the eastern shore of Lake Tana. Seven other panel paintings, an incised icon and a mural fragment have also been attributed to him.
