The study below deals with the problem of the creative individual and is based on a broad view of artistic material from the early Middle Ages to the present day. The author tries to find out in what way the creators in keeping with the customs and conventions of the given age, or in opposition to them tried to express their own personality; how they tried, in more or less refined ways -- through signature, hidden or obvious self portrait, a particular sign, individual style, or particular expression -- to leave some trace of their existence, their artistic conceptions, their feelings.
