The waveforms of VLF electromagnetic waves recorded at the time of the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake

The VLF waveforms of the electromagnetic waves recorded in videotape during a few hours before and after the Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) earthquake (M=7.3) have been examined. We classified the waveforms and investigated their origins. Comparison with the lightning data, provided by electric power companies, indicated that most of waveforms were explained as lightning origin. The waves clearly associated with the earthquake were only those recorded at the time of S wave arrival. (Communicated by Seiya UYEDA, M. J. A., May 12, 2003)
