Zusammenfassung:The breakup of Yugoslavia during the 1990s was in part caused by long standing ethnic strife in regions of the country. In 1991 Macedonia became one of the several new countries created from the former Yugoslav Republic. This raison detre for Macedonia becoming an independent state seems a bit vague. What is clear is that ethnic distrust between the countrys ethnic Albanian Muslim minority and the Macedonian Greek Orthodox majority became a focal point.
