Zusammenfassung: | — We describe a novel active‐matrix liquid‐crystal‐display technology that drives a ferroelectric‐liquid‐crystal (FLC) light‐modulating layer with a reflective, crystalline‐silicon CMOS backplane. We have realized two prototypes: a 256 × 256 display with 15‐μm pixel pitch, and a 1280 × 1024 display with 7.6‐μm pixel pitch. Using sequential color and “digital” time‐domain gray scale, we display images with up to 15 bits of color at frame rates up to 76 Hz. The resulting displays are useful for both projection and “virtual” display applications, and have outstanding cost, light efficiency, and image quality characteristics. |
