Phototherapy for Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia

In Reply.— We appreciate the thoughtful review and comments of Dr Poland regarding the analysis of mortality in the NICHD phototherapy study. The essence of Dr Poland's letter seems to be that, for infants of birth weights less than 1,000 g, a difference of mortality was observed with more deaths in the phototherapy group than the control group and that this difference may be a real difference even though it was not found to be statistically significant.
