Zusammenfassung:	A survey on the number of live laboratory animals reared in research institutions, including universities, biomedical institutes, testing laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and animal breeders, was conducted on June 1, 2009. One thousand seventy-four replies were recovered from 1,593 institutions, and 471 of them had used live laboratory animals from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009. A total of 11,337,334 live laboratory animals were being maintained on June 1, 2009 in Japan.
