The reaction of CO with iron salts in the presence of benzene-dithiol depends on the oxidation state of iron, pH of the solution, temperature and CO pressure. In alkaline EtOH one obtains labile cis-[Fe(CO) (C complexes, which cannot be isolated in the solid state. On acidifying, oxidizing with O or heating the solution, the CO ligands are split off; after reduction with NaBH , CO can be co-ordinated again at pH > 7 under normal conditions. Reacting benzene-1-thiomethyl-2-thiol in alkaline medium with Fe and CO yields the isolable [cis-Fe(CO) (CH S-C -S) ], which is characterized by elemental analyses, IR, H NMR and mass spectra.
