The Effect of Linalool Vapour on Silver-Gelatine Photographs and Bookbinding Leathers

Linalool is a compound found in essential oils. Our previous study has shown the antifungal activity of vapours of linalool and its mild effects on paper. This present study shows the effects of linalool on silver photographs and on leathers. Even at low concentration, corresponding to a preventive use, linalool vapours are harmful on all tested materials. Therefore we do not recommend the use of linalool or others linalool-based products in storage areas containing these types of materials. Le linalol est un composé volatil de terpène que l'on trouve dans les arômes naturels des huiles essentielles. Dans une étude précédente nous avons pu démontrer que les vapeurs de linalol ont un effet fongicide. Elles n'ont aucun effet négatif sur le papier. La présente étude montre quels sont les effets des vapeurs de linalol sur les photographies argentiques et sur les cuirs de reliure. Il apparaît clairement que, même à faible concentration correspondant à un usage préventif, les vapeurs de linalol ont des effets néfastes sur tous les matériaux testés. C'est pourquoi nous déconseillons l'utilisation de linalol ou d'autres produits dérivés à base de linalol dans les aires de stockage de matériaux photographiques argentiques ou en cuir. Linalool ist eine flüchtige terpenoide Verbindung, die in natürlichen aromatischen Ölen vorkommt. In einer vorhergehenden Studie konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass die Dämpfe von Linalool eine fungizide Wirkung haben. Sie haben keine negativen Auswirkungen auf Papier. Die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt die Auswirkungen von Linalool Dämpfen auf Silbergelatine-Fotografien und Leder. Hier wird deutlich, dass die Verbindung auch bei Anwendung in nur geringer Konzentration deutlich negative Auswirkungen auf alle untersuchten Materialien hat. Daher muss vom Einsatz von Linalool oder anderen linaloolhaltigen Produkten bei Fotomaterialien und Leder abgeraten werden.
