Cylindrical silicon near-IR optical amplifier driven by direct current

We propose a mechanism enabling amplification of the surface tunneling modes propagating over the semiconductor cylinder surface pumped by a direct current. Amplification of a whispering-gallery mode with a net gain as high as 1 0 3 c m − 1 is demonstrated.
