‘Nem uma coisa nem outra’: Nomadic Subjectivity in the Crónicas of Ilse Losa

A rare example of successful non-native writing in Portuguese literature, Ilse Losa uses her cultural duality to present a multiplicity of perspectives and transgression of borders in keeping with feminist philosopher Rosi Braidotti's 1994 characterization of Nomadic Subjectivity. In the crónicas of À Flor do Tempo (1997), Losa frequently shifts between distant geographical landscapes and linguistic contexts, bringing figures from (principally) German and Portuguese cultural history into contact with one another, consistently blending and bending boundaries between their separate spheres. Combining a collection-wide analysis with close readings, this article examines how Losa's transnational identity has influenced her crónica writing and how this might link to Braidotti's theory of Nomadic Subjectivity.
