Preprints and Proceedings Published by Scholastic and Learned Societies and Associations in Japan

A questionnaire on preprints and summerized proceedings published by Japan's scholastic and learned societies and associations was conducted to present basic data to be used in preparation of a database. The survey covered 1,112 organizations and societies chosen from “Directory of the Learned Societies in Japan (1981)” and “Directory of Medical Science Societies in Japan (1985)”. The questionnaire was designed to identify among other things ; 1) volume of preprints and proceedings in Japan, 2) their bibliographic elements, 3) availability. The results show that 1) 670 organizations, or 79.4% of the respondents publish preprints and/or proceedings, 2) 149 articles on average appear in each publication, 3) The total number of articles amounts to some 198,000.
