Zusammenfassung:This article examines human interest in model building (ships, boats, trains, etc.) and draws parallels between models and (poetic) metaphors that, it is hoped, illumine both phenomena. Both models and metaphors involve important alterations of original realities in size and material. Both make available experiences otherwise beyond the reach of most people (entry into other worlds). Both facilitate the communication of ideas and feelings that lie beyond words. Both are devices for passing on tradition and for teaching important concepts. Most important, both models and metaphors inspire craftsmanship and evoke a powerful sense of presence. By exploring these processes, this article brings out the grounding of metaphor in concrete reality and suggests a philosophical dimension to model making.
