Quality Assurance in South African Universities: Global Perspectives and Reflections on the Future

This article reflects on the state of quality assurance activities in South African universities. Reflections on developments and practices within the system are made from international quality assurance systems and practices. The article also highlights the role that the Quality Promotion Unit—the official body for quality assurance in South African Higher Education-plays in the enhancement of quality. The article concludes with perspectives on the relationship between the government and universities regarding quality, the format of a quality assurance system, as well as the understanding of quality as good practice. Concluding remarks on the key principles underpinning any quality assurance system within universities are also made.
