A summary of the occurrence of Salmonella in chelonians, ophidians, crocodilians and saurians, particularly geckos, is provided. A wide variety of Salmonella serotypes have been isolated from at least 22 species of gekkonidae. The carrier rate in wild geckos ranges from 2 to 64%. A discussion on the potential health hazard posed by geckos to handlers and pet owners is provided. The symptoms, pathology and treatment of salmonellosis in reptiles are also described. |
