Zusammenfassung:We discuss the feasibility of various configurations for ultrafast all-optical-switching elements (AOSEs) using third-order optical nonlinearities. The band-gap nonlinearities, in which the pump- and signal-photon energies are both close to the band-gap energy, do not satisfy basic requirements of the ultrafast AOSEs. Possible configurations to fulfill the requirements are suggested.
