Simple Methods to Estimate a Weekend Trip Distribution Matrix Using Traffic Counts on Screen Lines

Origin-destination (OD) survey data are indispensable for overall transportation planning process. However, since most of OD surveys are made mainly on weekdays, we are usually afflicted with lack of weekend traffic data when we have to make transportation planning in resort or recreation areas. This paper proposes two simple methods which can estimate a weekend trip distribution matrix from a weekday trip distribution matrix already known, using traffic counts on screen lines. OD servey data on both weekdays and weekend in Keihanshin metropolitan area are used to test and compare these methods. The results obtained fit statistically the observed data.
